

This facility is a 50,000 square foot multi-use recreational health and wellness center. It is located on the campus of Heather Hill Hospital in Chardon, Ohio. The building has been designed as a sustainable, high performance, healthy green building. The program for the new Y has provided for the following services and space:
• A large indoor recreational swimming pool with lap pool. • Segmented fitness center with strength training and aerobic machines. • Multipurpose gymnasium and teen center for structured recreation and free play. • Health and wellness center with rehabilitation services and exam rooms. • Aerobics room with cushioned wood floor, mirrors and stereo sound systems. • Senior center with space for indoor gardening, crafts, games and fellowship. • Babysitting area for temporary care of infants during adult class participation. • Toddler play area for fun, games, art and reading classes. • Multipurpose meeting and conference rooms with kitchenettes.
This building's sustainable design features include the following:
• Natural day lighting. • Geothermal ground source heat pump & HVAC system. • Active solar hot water heating for pool water. • High indoor air quality. • Electrical lighting controls with daylight and occupancy sensor controls. • Long lasting durable natural materials. • Materials with recycled content or from rapidly renewable sources. • Low VOC finishes and products. • High performance insulation and glazing systems.


The new Geauga YMCA at Heather Hill will be a wonderful addition to the Greater Cleveland YMCA network. The new building will serve as a model for future recreational buildings, which promote good health and ecological responsibility.
