Sustainable choices are those that do not deplete natural resources at a faster rate than they can be replaced. The impact of the man-made environment on the natural environment is a significant one. Over the next 40 years, the number of new homes and other buildings to be constructed in the U.S. is expected to equal the number already built. About half of the natural resources required for a home are in its initial construction and the other half is in its operation and maintenance as a home. This home is intended to make responsible selections for both.
The construction materials include concrete, engineered wood using industrial waste products, locally harvested straw bale insulated walls, and an earth stucco exterior. While this is the first straw bale home we know of in Cuyahoga County, straw bale technology has been used in other parts of the country since early in the 20th century. The home will also include recycled doors and other salvaged interior materials.
During the useful life of this home the Owners will enjoy indoor air free from toxic gases commonly found in paints, sealants, adhesives and other building products. Hot water will be heated only as needed and insulated glass windows, straw bale insulated walls and spray foam insulated roofs will reduce heat loss and cold air infiltration. Natural ventilation and ceiling fans will cool the home in the summer. Rainwater will be collected for reuse as lawn and garden irrigation. Storm water will recharge the natural water table through the porous paving in the driveway rather than being channeled to the overtaxed storm sewer system.
This home celebrates the natural balance that is possible between the natural and man-made environment and helps preserve resources for future generations.
